SPORTS AND RECREATION:

Platte County Community Centers YMCA Sports offers a variety of fall sports leagues for all ages during the 2010 season.

Flag Football is available for kids in Kindergarten through 7th grade. The season runs Sept. 6 through Nov. 6. Registration deadline is August 23. 

Basketball is available for kids in Kindergarten through 7th grade. The season runs Sept. 13 until Nov. 6. Registration deadline is August 30.

Bitty Soccer is an instructional league for ages 3-4. The season runs from Sept. 1 - 20. Registration deadline is August 27.

Bitty Flag Football is an instructional league for ages 3-4. The season runs from Oct. 4 - 20. Registration deadline is October 1.

Bitty Baseball is an instructional league for ages 3-4. The season runs from Sept. 3 - 18. Registration deadline is August 31.

Adult Co-Ed Volleyball is for ages 18 and older. The season runs from Sept. 8 - Oct. 20. No individual registrations will be accepted. For league entry form, contact Sports Director Brandon Palmer using the contact information below. Registration deadline is August 30.

Adult Co-Ed Basketball is for ages 18 and older. The season runs from Sept. 12 - Nov. 7. No individual registrations will be accepted. For league entry form, contact Sports Director Brandon Palmer using the contact information below. Registration deadline is August 23.

Guests can use the Community Centers for a daily fee of $10 or become a member for the better deal.

Platte City Sports signups for Soccer, Registration is on-line at www.plattecity.org or at City Hall, 400 Main Street, Platte City from Monday through Friday 8 am - 5 p.m.  Deadline for registration is August 31.  The season will run from September 25 to October 16. Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon  Platte Ridge Park hosts  Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event  Platte Ridge Park will host a Household Hazardous Waste Program August 14 from 8 am to Noon.  Bring your automotive fluids, batteries, fuels, household cleaners, lawn & garden products, pesticides, paint and related products to the park for proper disposal. Commercial and industrial waste is prohibited. The program is open to all citizens living within participating communities which include the following: Iatan, Farley, Houston Lake, Kansas City, Lake Waukomis, Northmoor, Parkville, Platte City, Platte Woods, Riverside, Tracy, Weatherby Lake, Weston and unincorporated Platte County. Residents living in a community not participating will have to pay a fee in order to drop off material. Many of these materials are a fire hazard and if not disposed of properly, pollute our streams and lakes. The MARC Solid Waste Management District manages this program. A majority of the materials received are recycled. Aug. 21, Saturday at 10 a.m. Parkville Days Riverfest Parade, Downtown Parkville www.parkvillemo.org This year’s theme is “Parkville the Heart of Platte County” and Platte County Presiding Commissioner Betty Knight is the Grand Marshal.  County Presiding Commissioner Betty Knight was first elected to office in 1995 and has overwhelmingly won re-election for three subsequent terms. Betty is the Past President of the National Association of Regional Councils. She is also Past President of the Missouri Association of Counties and Past Chair of Mid-America Regional Council, an influential organization of city and county governments in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Betty now leads the Missouri County Commissioner's Association. In 2002, the Missouri Chapter of the American Planning Association selected Knight as the recipient of the "2002 Excellence in Planning Award.” With her leadership, Platte County has completed four comprehensive planning projects beginning with a 20-year strategic plan that eventually led to the development of land use, road and bridge and parks/storm water plans. Betty has been honored as one of Kansas City’s Most Influential Business Women at Ingram’s Annual Conference for Women Executives. The Anne Robb Townsend Civic Leadership Award was present to Betty in 2003.  She has also received national recognition as an Officeholder of the Year award from the National Association of Republican County Officials in 2001. Betty Knight has said, "It is such an honor to serve the citizens of Platte County.  I am proud of our continued commitment to make Platte County a great place to live."
